Rights on the Move Project: Cooperation between the University of Münster, the Refugee Law Clinic Hamburg and Columbia Law School, New York
The “Rights on the Move” project, which has been running since 2018, is part of a collaboration between the University of Münster, the Refugee Law Clinic Hamburg (RLC Hamburg), and the Columbia Society of International Law (CSIL) at Columbia Law School in New York. For one week each, students work in the host city – Hamburg or New York – on a pro bono project assigned by a partner NGO that addresses issues related to asylum and refugee law. The goal of the “Rights on the Move” project is thus to provide the partner NGOs with significant added value for their work. On the German side, five students each from Hamburg and Münster will participate.
The project will take place again in the spring of next year, in two phases: In the first phase, from March 15 to 20, 2027, students from Columbia Law School will visit Hamburg, where they will be hosted by the students from Hamburg and Münster. From March 28 to April 3, 2027, the German students will travel to New York for a week, where the Columbia students will organize a program. The joint research work will be complemented by an accompanying program that includes discussions and lectures by and with scholars and practitioners, as well as cultural activities.
The call for applications for the 2027 exchange is expected to be published here in September 2026.
