The Institute of Ecumenical Theology is part of the Faculty of Protestant Theology of the University of Münster.
On the initiative of Ernst Kinder (1910-1970) it was founded 1954 as Seminar for Ecumenical Theology and was given the (more independent) status of an Institute in 1960.
Ernst Kinder was the first director of the Institute till his death in 1970, followed by Eckhard Lessing and Friederike Nüssel.
Since 2008 the Institute is directed by Hans-Peter Grosshans.
