Die Taufe des Äthiopiers: eine alternative Theologie der Taufpastoral

Abstract

Unter dem Eindruck einer faszinierenden Äthiopienreise wird über die Taufe des Äthiopiers in der
Apostelgeschichte nachgedacht als gegenwartsbedeutsame Erinnerung an die ziemlich unbekannte
Tradition einer Taufpastoral, die weniger eine Initiation in bestehende Gemeinschafts- und Glaubensformen
anzielt denn die Freigabe in die Unbekannte neuer Vorstellungen des Glaubens und der Sozialformen
der Getauften in den Blick nimmt. Solche Freigabe vertraut auf die in der Taufe verbürgte
Wegbegleitung der Getauften durch den Heiligen Geist in ihren „fernen“ Biographien, Familien und
Gesellschaften.

Being enraptured by the memories of a fascinating journey through parts of Ethiopia, the author ponders
the story of the Ethiopian’s baptism in the Acts. The article suggests that there exists a rather
hidden tradition, which may be important for the future view of baptism as it addresses some of the
challenges of our societies. Against the dominating understanding of baptism as initiation into already
realized shapes of communities and faith, this tradition sees baptism as a freeing and fresh starting
point with maybe surprising impacts on the lives, the social arrangements and habits of the baptized.
Such an openness is rooted in the confidence that the Holy Spirit will accompany the baptized
throughout their lives, both within their families and within society.
