Abstract

»Faces of Power« was the title of the numismatics course organised by the Royal Dutch Institute in Rome (KNIR) and the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Rome from 3rd to 12th March 2022. 18 students from different Dutch and German universities came together for ten days in Rome to discuss questions about representation of power through the portrayal of specific people and groups in Roman antiquity and the early modern period, and that in particular on the medium of coins and medals. The academic debate about the topic took place in several lectures by Paul Beliën (De Nederlandsche Bank), Dr. Liesbeth Claes (Leiden University), Dr. Martin Hirsch (Staatliche Münzsammlung Munich), Prof. Dr. Fleur Kemmers (Goethe University Frankfurt am Main), Dr. Erika Manders and Dr. Marleen Termeer (Radboud University Nijmegen). In hands-on workshops in museums in Rome and in the Biblioteca Casanatense, the students had actual physical contact with coins and medals. For the digital project »Things that talk« (TTT), an online exhibition was created that talks about nine examples of such faces of power, which is aimed at a broad audience.
