We offer exciting Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis projects in the fields of chemistry and nanomaterials. Current topics include:
Synthesis of Shapemorphing Particles
How can light be used to change the shape of microscopic particles on demand? In this project, you will work with light-responsive polymer particles and investigate how polarized light can transform spherical particles into anisotropic shapes. You will explore how the molecular design of the photoswitches and polymer network influences the resulting particle deformation. The project involves the synthesis of azo photoswitches, polymer particle synthesis, electron microscopy, light-induced deformation experiments, and image analysis.
Synthesis of Model-Microplastic
How can the behavior of microplastics in the environment be studied in a controlled way? In this project, you will synthesize well-defined model microplastic particles that can be sensitively detected and quantitatively tracked through the incorporation of metal complexes. The project involves the synthesis of labelled model microplastic particles, particle characterization, sample preparation, and mass spectrometric analysis. If interested, part of the project can include collecting and analyzing environmental samples abroad.
Stimuli-Responsive Emulsions
How can emulsions be designed to remain stable over long periods, while still being controllably altered or broken by external stimuli? In this project, you will work with pH- and temperature-responsive microgels that adsorb at oil–water interfaces and control emulsion stability. You will investigate how the interactions between microgels and emulsion droplets change under different conditions. The project includes the synthesis of core–shell microgels, emulsion preparation, microscopy, and quantitative force measurements using AFM and FluidFM.
