Biostore is an interdisciplinary research project of the University of Münster in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Society and the Helmholtz Association. The aim of the project is to develop sustainable batteries using bio-based and recyclable materials and additives. The project is funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia with €2.7 million. Research will focus on replacing fossil materials with more environmentally friendly alternatives such as bacterial exopolysaccharides, natural rubber and other biopolymers, and reducing negative environmental impacts. In addition, the project will carry out a life cycle assessment to evaluate sustainability and include political and social aspects in the assessment. The interdisciplinary team led by Prof. Dr. Jochen Schmid therefore includes experts from biology, chemistry, battery research, political and social sciences as well as economics. The aim is to create a strong network for the development of new sustainable materials and to extend the research results to other industries.
