Expression as Mimesis and Event

My work is an attempt to think together two reading worlds: one committed to the notion of mimesis and its reassurance machinery and the other, of a Deleuzian breeding, that favours planes of immanence and events as surface effects. Writing with Deleuze, I will show how these movements – of surfaces, depths, and their interchangeability – are grounded in the Spinoza-inspired concept of expression, a purely relational entity which circulates through and envelops both beyond contradiction and discord. Expression, then, rather than presenting me with a monolithic mould, would be scaffolded out of various “stellar” conjunctions within a system that continually revisits its relations. Itself a poiesis-theoria compound, it would all the while allow its components to enter new situations and to reform differently. Thus equipped, and hopefully somewhat extending Deleuze’s interpretation, my reading of expression will be offered as yet another way to look at literary texts beyond signification, the representational or interpretive strategies on the hunt for background meaning, meanwhile retaining representation as a possibility. Within this gesture, I will explicate the complicity between mimetic statements and Deleuzian sense-events while testing the robustness of this concept against a short collection of in-yer-face plays plus several works by Martin Crimp and Laura Wade.
