Last Wednesday evening, 24 May, we welcomed a team from the Munich head office of the global strategy consultancy Roland Berger. As part of our PhD student seminar "Entrepreneurship & Startup Management", our PhD students from the natural sciences were able to gain insights into the everyday work of a consultant and into the topics of entrepreneurship and business models in strategy consulting.

Two alumni from Münster, Dr Johannes Klein and Dr Leonie Deilmann, returned to their alma mater. Johannes Klein (Principal, focus on Financial Services) completed his doctorate with Prof. Leker at the IfbM in Business Chemistry in 2018, Leonie Deilmann (Consultant, focus on Industrials) in Physical Chemistry. It was therefore particularly exciting to learn first-hand about the path from a doctorate in chemistry at the University of Münster to a consulting career at Roland Berger. As a Senior Specialist in Human Resources Marketing, Ms. Linda Pielsticker was able to give a good overview of the development opportunities for natural scientists at Roland Berger by answering questions about starting a career at Roland Berger.

During the event, the PhD students learned that entrepreneurship is already firmly anchored in the values of the international strategy consultancy Roland Berger. During the collaborative development of a "Business Model Canvas" for the career field of strategy consulting, it became clear to all participants how important human capital and good interaction in an interdisciplinary and diverse team are in order to generate the maximum benefit for the client. Through exciting insights into the daily work of a strategy consultant, it also became clear to the participants that the consulting industry has experienced a great change in working models through Corona and is constantly evolving. The successful event was made complete by a look into practice: two case studies showed how analytical problem-solving skills can contribute to the successful realisation of consulting projects. All participants were able to gain an authentic impression of the professional perspectives in strategy consulting.

We would like to thank our guests from Roland Berger for the successful event and are pleased that we were able to introduce our PhD students to consulting as one of the many career paths for natural scientists from the University of Münster.
