Causality and Data Analysis - You Are Smarter than Your Data
Andreas Galka
Although the elucidation of the relationship between causes and effects represents a central task for scientific research, until recently explicit discussion of “causality” has been avoided in many disciplines. This has changed with the development of “Causal Calculus” by Judea Pearl, which will be discussed in the first part of this talk. The second part will review the concept of “Granger Causality”, originally developed in the field of economics and now widely used for the analysis of multivariate time series recorded in neuroscience and other fields. Various applications of causality analysis to problems from biomedical engineering and statistics will be presented.
