Preconditions
- ZIV user id (you can get a user ID at the ZIV Mein ZIV)
- central user password
- Windows Live Mail 2011 (it is reommended to use the latest version, Windows Live Mail is part of Windows Live Essentials, get it here)
Introduction
Generally there are two ways of checking emails. POP3 downloads your emails from the email server of the university to your computer. IMAP leaves the emails on the server and you can only check them locally. If you only use one PC to check your emails, the best option is to choose POP3. If you have several computers to check your emails, choose IMAP. Please note that with IMAP an Internet connection is always necessary when you want to check your emails.
Configuration of Windows Live Mail
Step 1 : Start Windows Live Mail and set up a new email account. This is done by choosing the item
Email in the menu
Accounts (see image 1).

Step 2 : Fill in the form in the upcoming menu dialog (see image 2).
- Email address: userid@uni-muenster.de (userid@uni-muenster.de or a specific one e.g. yourname@uni-muenster.de that you created in Mein ZIV).
- Password: central user password
- activate Remember password
- Your name: Your Name

Step 3 :
If you want to use
POP3 look at image 3 and fill in the form. For
IMAP account settings look at image 4.
The
Logon user name at the bottom of the window must be your
user id.
Don't forget to set up the
outgoing mail server, which is in both cases the same.

Step 4 : Click
Next. That's it for the POP method. IMAP method still needs a little adjustment. Go on to step 5 for IMAP method.

Step 5 : In the overview mark the created IMAP account on the left side of the window, right click on it and click
Properties (look at image 6).

Step 5 : Go to
IMAP menu and fill in
mail at
Root folder path (look at image 7). Click
Apply then
OK. The configuration is now complete.
