As the University of Münster, we aim to contribute to climate protection and become carbon neutral as quickly as possible. To achieve this, the university has established a Climate Protection Management department since the beginning of the year, which is tasked with developing a climate protection concept over the next two years. As part of the concept development process, a comprehensive greenhouse gas balance of all relevant emissions from the university will be created. Additionally, potential areas for improvement will be analyzed, and scenarios and measures will be developed to enable the university to become carbon neutral as quickly as possible.

The concept will be developed in a participatory process involving all stakeholders at the university. Throughout the process, we aim to answer questions such as: Which areas of the university emit the most greenhouse gases? What climate protection measures already exist, and where can additional measures be implemented that can save a significant amount of CO2 or be easily implemented?

This project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action as part of the National Climate Initiative (NKI).

Project duration: January 15, 2025 - January 14, 2027
Title: KSI: Development of an Integrated Climate Protection Concept for the University of Münster
Funding reference number: 67K29102

National Climate Initiative:

"The National Climate Initiative was launched by the German government in 2008 to promote and fund numerous projects that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Its programs and projects cover a wide range of climate protection activities, from developing long-term strategies to providing concrete support and investment incentives. This diversity guarantees good ideas. The National Climate Initiative helps to anchor climate protection at the local level, benefiting consumers, businesses, municipalities, and educational institutions alike."
