Course Offerings Winter Term 2025-2026

Prof. Sarah Albiez-Wieck from the History Department will be offering an intensive master-seminar in block form on "Gender and Empire. The Philippines under Spanish, US and Japanese rule," together with Dr. Olivia Anne M. Habana from Ateneo de Manila University.

After an (important!) initial meeting via Zoom on September 8th (9-11 a.m.), we will have one week of in-presence-sessions from October 6th-10th, each day from 10-12 a.m. and 2-6 p.m. (on Friday only until 3.p.m.). Access for the initial meeting is via: https://uni-ms.zoom-x.de/j/6603262319?pwd=b3lFWG1iMjBRZjl1czJiZzlvTUxoUT09; Meeting-ID: 660 326 2319; Kenncode: 927216.

The seminar analyzes central strategies of colonial rule in the Philippines under Spanish (1565-1898), US (1898-1946) and Japanese occupation (1942-1945). A special focus in the seminar will be on gender relations. Based on a selection of texts and sources (among them travel accounts and photographs), we will discuss questions of gender norms, family politics, demography,  racism and global connections.
