Few people would dispute that emotions are central to the human experience. But how or what did people feel in the past? How did emotions affect their lives, their sense of self, their behaviour and their decisions? Historians recognised the historic specificity of emotional states and ‘emotional regimes’ relatively late, and while we have developed a rather varied understanding of past emotions, the boom time in the history of emotions of the 2000s and 2010s seems to have passed. In this module, we are going to survey the field, examine and compare concepts and methodologies and ask, what and how an appreciation of past emotions can change our understanding of history.
