This course introduces students to the phonetics and phonology of English. We will explore how English speech sounds are produced, described, transcribed, and combined in connected speech. Topics include the articulatory basis of speech production, the consonant and vowel systems of English, phonemic and phonetic transcription using the IPA, connected speech processes, syllable structure, word stress, and intonation. Throughout the course, students will acquire the technical terminology needed to describe English pronunciation accurately and will develop practical skills for analyzing and improving pronunciation. Special attention will be paid to differences between selected accents of English and to common pronunciation challenges faced by learners. The course is designed both to strengthen students’ own awareness of English pronunciation and to provide a foundation for explaining and teaching pronunciation in future educational contexts.
