This project seminar integrates current approaches from the didactics of literature and cultural ecology, exploring the extent to which literature lessons serve as a space for play and possibility regarding literary-aesthetic and cultural-ecological learning. The course incorporates both traditional multimodal media (such as picture books) and analog game media within a broader media mix (e.g., board games). A key area of inquiry involves the fundamentals of Analog Game Studies, as analog and imaginative narrative games represent a growing field of study and research within children’s and young adult media studies and the didactics of German language and literature. Forms, modes, and cultures of play are already being examined through international and interdisciplinary collaboration at the intersection of Cultural Studies, Game Studies, Media Studies, and Theatre Studies.

Designed around active development and process-oriented reflection (inquiry-based learning), the seminar functions as a research laboratory for the didactics of the subject. Its core component is the development of an original pen-and-paper game system; consequently, (educational) worldbuilding serves as a central theme. In collaboration with Katrin Fischer—an educational game developer and former primary school teacher (partnering with the University of Bonn and the LAGIP Research Center for Analog and Imaginative Games)—participants will explore the fundamentals of (competence-oriented) game development. A distinctive feature of the seminar is a mandatory field trip to SPIEL ESSEN 2026—Europe’s largest game fair—including participation in "Educators Day."

The seminar aims to introduce participants to educational game-based learning as a cultural space and realm of possibility for teachers, to examine the various stakeholders in the field, and to explore the integration of games into literature and media instruction from a specific cultural-ecological perspective. Requirements for course credit, required reading materials, and the Learnweb password will be announced during the first session.
