Important note for incoming Erasmus students: Please note that this is a Master’s-level seminar and is therefore only open to MA students.

Algorithms are ubiquitous in our daily use of online media, among others manifesting in curation algorithms that sort platform feeds, AI chatbots or AI companions we consult for information or emotional support, and AI systems designed to filter harmful online content. In this seminar we engage with these algorithms and how they shape our media practices, how they function, the underlying logics they employ, and the associated potentials and risks. Our analysis will be grounded in a comprehensive theoretical engagement with socio-technical approaches, Human-Machine Communication (HMC), theories of automation, and media appropriation practices. A primary objective of the course is to critically evaluate the degree of user agency when interacting with algorithmic media.
