TikTok has become a key platform in the changing landscape of online communication and has been subject to debate due to its allegedly polarizing and addictive algorithm.
In this seminar, we work in groups throughout the semester to analyze socially and culturally relevant events on TikTok. Examples include state elections, police violence, or the widely debated whale rescue in the spring. We quantitatively analyze how these topics gain attention on TikTok, which actors dominate the discussion and how state actors communicate about these events.
You will learn to conduct basic descriptive analyses of TikTok data using RStudio. Throughout the semester, you will prepare, visualize and present your findings.
Seminar, discussions and contributions will be held in English. International students are welcome.
