In this course, you will have the chance to consolidate your theoretical and methodological knowledge from the foundational module ”Introduction to Literary and Cultural Studies I and II”. We will read and discuss two Victorian novels, Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847) and Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897), as well as a number of key texts, including feminist criticism, postcolonial theory, and genre theory. By applying these various approaches to the novels, we will explore how different theoretical lenses as well as literary history shape our understanding of texts. We will also consider adaptations of the novels.

This class will focus on the Victorian novel and its central role in nineteenth-century literary and cultural history. Students will have the opportunity to consolidate their theoretical and methodological knowledge from the foundational module “Introduction to Literary and Cultural Studies I and II” by engaging with a selection of Victorian novels and critical texts. By applying various theoretical approaches, including feminist criticism, postcolonial theory, and ecocriticism, to the novels, we will explore how different theoretical lenses as well as literary history shape our understanding of these texts.
