This class will focus on contemporary Black British literature from the late twentieth century to the present, examining fiction and (performance) poetry by Black British authors. Students will be introduced to key theoretical approaches in the study of contemporary Black literature from the British Isles and explore the thematic concerns and formal innovations of the texts under discussion. Situating these literary texts within British, diasporic, transnational, and intersectional contexts, we will consider how contemporary Black British authors engage with questions of history, the enduring legacies of the transatlantic slave trade and the British Empire, as well as migration, identity, and belonging in multicultural Britain.
