When you say you know the meaning of a word, a phrase, or a sentence - what do you actually know? What does "meaning" mean in language?

In linguistics, the study of meaning is usually divided into semantics, the study of context-independent meaning, and pragmatics, the study of context-dependent meaning. This seminar explores both areas, mainly from a cognitive linguistic perspective, examining how meaning in language arises and how linguistic systems organise and manage different types of meaning and meaning relations.

Knowledge of basic linguistic concepts and terminology (from the Introduction to English Linguistic classes) is required for this seminar.
