This seminar explores language attitudes toward varieties of English in educational contexts, focusing on the beliefs and evaluations that students and teachers hold about different English varieties and their speakers. Students will engage with key concepts such as World Englishes, native-speakerism, and language ideologies, and examine how these shape language attitudes in the classroom. Through a practical, research-oriented approach, students will explore a range of methods for investigating language attitudes, including surveys and questionnaires, interviews, societal treatment studies, and verbal-guise tests, while gaining first-hand experience in designing and conducting a small-scale empirical studies in various exercises.
