In this class we will cover major linguistic developments in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century English as well as the corresponding socio-historical background. The main focus of the class lies on the analysis of primary texts and their linguistic features. The class texts and readings of your own choice will include works of fiction as well as non-fictional texts representing British and American varieties of English.

You are expected to read one longer literary text of your own choice from the 18th or 19th century, British or American (for example a novel or a play).
