In this course the concepts of quantum optics will be applied to various physical systems which rely on the quantum nature of the electromagnetic field.

Key topics will be: emission and absorption of radiation (spontaneous and stimulated emission, line shape and linewidth), light-matter systems in the strong coupling regime (Jaynes-Cummings model, Rabi oscillations, dressed states), theory of open quantum systems and dissipation (decoherence and relaxation processes), elements of laser theory (laser threshold, coherence properties), interplay between electron-photon and electron-phonon interaction (zero-phonon line and phonon sidebands, phonon-induced decoherence).

The course is self-contained, in particular a participation is possible without having participated in the course on Theoretical Quantum Optics in the previous summer semester. It starts with a short introduction of the basic concepts (description of the light field in terms of creation and annihilation operators for photons, structure of the Hamiltonians for the light field and the light-matter coupling, correlation and coherence functions), which constitute the basis for the various applications.
