In this course, you will have the chance to consolidate your theoretical and methodological knowledge from the foundational module ”Introduction to Literary and Cultural Studies I and II”. We will read and discuss three Gothic novels: Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto (1764), arguably the first Gothic novel, Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre (1847), which uses gothic elements, and Jane Austen’s parody of the genre Northanger Abbey (1817).  We will also read a number of key texts, including feminist criticism, postcolonial theory, and genre theory. By applying these various approaches to the novels, we will explore how different theoretical lenses as well as literary history shape our understanding of texts. We will also consider adaptations of the novels.
