The global political order has changed significantly since the Industrial Revolution. Some scholars speak of three waves of globalization. In particular the third one has witnessed the emergence of a growing number of global non-state actors that play an increasing role in world politics. Global Governance approaches theorize their role with regard to their legitimacy, power and influence, dysfunctional behavior or change. In this regard, they also engage in analyses of new modes of governance such as soft law, public-private partnerships, hybrid governance regimes and the like. The aim of this seminar is it to show how these non-state global actors become experts in particular policy fields, influence discourses or set standards, and thus, shape global politics. The seminar will introduce students to theoretical approaches of global governance as well as theories of international organizations (IOs). IOs are broadly understood which means we will also cover and critically discuss the role of non-governmental organizations as well as multinational corporations in world politics. Based on this introduction to theory, we will secondly engage in a few case studies where these organizations engage in new forms of governance in specific policy fields. The seminar provides students with analytical skills to better understand the politics of intergovernmental and international non-state organizations. Through the case studies, students will acquire knowledge about how these organizations attempt to influence politics in their respective policy fields.
