Book bans and book challenges have considerably shape the discourse surrounding literary reading and books for young readers. This can be seen in the implementations of book bans in US school and university curricula as well as in the newly emerging genre of books-about-book-bans. This course will look at both phenomena. We will discuss the mechanisms of book banning with the help of a case study and will then explore how literary fiction imagines and responds to – through different genres – book banning as a 21st-century phenomenon.
