This lecture explores what came after Modernism. It first gives a survey across various literatures and arts, trying to gauge the importance of new cultural departures which started in the 1960s and arguably show their impact even today. Much of these new developments have been summarized under the label of postmodernism, and another query pursued by the lecture will concentrate on the viability and continued relevance of this label. Most of all, however, the focus will be on the developments in literature during that time, with some emphasis on the novel, but also taking into account other genres, as we go along. The lecture thus hopes to contribute to the understanding of where literature has arrived today, what it can mean and do in our world today, and how it reverberates with our contemporary culture(s) at large.
