The seminar explores the main features of tragedy as a dramatic genre and its specific functions in early modern Britain, with a special focus on Shakespeare as one of its most prominent authors at the time. The discussions will seek insight into the attractiveness of this historical genre which has fallen out of fashion and use in the theatre today, but which survives as a mode and concept, which was so impressively and memorably shaped by William Shakespeare and his contemporaries.
