This block lecture course is concerned with the physics of biological matter, such as intracellular components, cells as physical entities, and multicellular tissues. We will use methods of continuum mechanics, stochastic dynamics, and particle-based models to describe biophysical self-organisation across scales. Some of the questions to be answered during this course are: How does a biological cell control its shape through its active cytoskeleton? How do cells dynamically hold on to their environment? What do tissues and liquid crystals have in common?
