This course introduces students to Postcolonial Englishes, using Schneider's Dynamic Model as a framework for understanding the emergence and development of different varieties of English. Participants will select one of four case-study countries – Australia, India, Jamaica, or Nigeria – and examine the English variety or varieties associated with that context. Guided by the phases of Schneider’s model, the course explores the historical and cultural background of language contact situations that have shaped these Englishes. Students will also analyze key linguistic features (including pronunciation, grammatical structures, and discourse features) through a range of exercises and tasks that foster a practical understanding of postcolonial varieties of English. Following an initial online introductory meeting via Zoom with all participants, the course continues in country-specific groups, which meet for full sessions on a four-week basis, resulting in three 90-minute meetings with each group.
