In the early twentieth-century United States, pedagogical concepts that sought answers to the educational challenges of a multicultural and multidenominational migrant society were widely debated. The central question was whether the citizens of a democratic state should be characterised by the greatest possible homogeneity or rather by a well balanced diversity. The most important contribution to this debate was made by the American sociologist and educational philosopher John Dewey. His classic book "Democracy and Education" (1916) can still provide us with important guidance when it comes to the basic principles and key elements of a truly democratic education. Dewey's book will be read and interpreted in detail during the seminar.
