Did leading Catholics in Germany betray the Weimar Republic in 1933? Was Catholicism largely resistant to the promises of National Socialism, or, on the contrary, particularly susceptible to deference to authority, anti-liberalism and anti-Semitism? Did Pope Pius XII remain silent about the persecution of the Jews? Such questions have been controversial for decades, but are still far from being resolved. In this proseminar, we will therefore take a detailed look at the highly complex relationship between Catholicism and National Socialism with the help of various types of sources.

Haben führende Katholik*innen in Deutschland 1933 die Republik von Weimar verraten? War der Katholizismus weitgehend resistent gegenüber den Versprechungen des Nationalsozialismus oder im Gegenteil besonders anfällig für Autoritätshörigkeit, Antiliberalismus und Antisemitismus? Hat Papst Pius XII. zur Verfolgung der Juden geschwiegen? Solche Fragen sind seit Jahrzehnten umstritten, aber noch lange nicht ausdiskutiert. In diesem Proseminar wird daher mithilfe unterschiedlicher Quellengattungen ein detaillierter Blick auf das hochkomplexe Verhältnis von Katholizismus und Nationalsozialismus geworfen.
