In this course, students will explore the literary and cultural constructions of childhood during the Victorian era through a close reading of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island (1883). This course introduces students to the fundamental skills of literary analysis, including close reading, critical thinking and contextual understanding. The course will also consider the ways in which these texts have been adapted and reinterpreted in various media. By the end of the course, students will possess a deeper understanding of the literary and cultural heritage of the Victorian era, as well as the skills to critically evaluate and analyze literary texts. These skills will serve as a foundation for further study in English literature and beyond and will also inform students’ understanding of the ways in which cultural narratives about childhood have evolved over time.
