This seminar delves into the diverse and dynamic world of early twentieth-century literature, exploring various movements and currents of the Modernist period. Rather than treating Modernism as a monolithic entity, we will examine the distinct styles, themes and innovations of several key movements, including Imagism, Vorticism and Bloomsbury Modernism. Through close reading of seminal works by writers such as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound, we will analyze the ways in which Modernist writers responded to the social, cultural, and philosophical upheavals of their time. Additionally, we will consider the works of other important figures, such as E.M. Forster, H.D., Katherine Mansfield and Wyndham Lewis. By examining a range of texts, including poetry, fiction and poetological essays, students will gain a nuanced understanding of the multiple strands of Modernism and their enduring impact on literary expression.
