In 2014, Michelle Levy argued that Robert Darnton's communications circuit, a highly influential model in the field of book history, is "silent on the question of gender" (Levy 2014, 297). It is within the past twenty years and out of such critiques that 'women's book history' has emerged, which looks to not only recover women players in the history of the book but to rethink the approaches that may have left them out in the first place. After introductory sessions that are aimed at familiarizing students with the development and concerns women's book history and feminist bibliography, weekly readings will provide specific examples of research arguments and methods, which can be used as the starting point for their own independent research. Engagement with weekly readings is expected.
