This course introduces the essential skills you need to engage with academic research in literary and cultural studies as well as linguistics. We begin by considering the foundations of scholarship and academic integrity before turning to practical research skills: mastering library terms and learning how to find, understand and evaluate relevant materials. You will develop strategies for reading academic texts efficiently, recognizing their structures, and analyzing their arguments. From there, we will focus on shaping your own research by finding a topic and formulating research questions and thesis statements. A strong emphasis is placed on documenting, referencing and citing sources accurately, ensuring your own work is both rigorous and ethical. Alongside these core skills, we will explore digital tools such as reference management software and engage critically with the possibilities and limitations of artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs) in academic research. By the end of the course, you will be equipped to navigate scholarly resources with confidence, develop relevant and manageable research projects, and ground your work responsibly within the wider academic conversation.
