‚Satire‘ steht nicht nur für zwei unterschiedliche Gattungen, sondern auch für eine Sprech- und Schreibart, die Missstände anprangert und – heute zumindest – der Lächerlichkeit preiszugeben versucht. Insbesondere aus den neuen und neusten Medien sind Satiresendungen und satirische Beiträge nicht wegzudenken, wo sie nicht nur auf erhebliche Resonanz stoßen, sondern mitunter auch drastische Reaktionen auslösen. Die Vorlesung stellt die unterschiedlichen Formen, die Geschichte und die komiktheoretischen Grundlagen der Satire dar. Auch die Frage nach der rechtlichen Zulässigkeit von Satire wird behandelt. Die meist literarischen Beispiele reichen von der Antike bis in die Gegenwart, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf der deutschsprachigen Literatur der Frühen Neuzeit (17. Jahrhundert) und der Moderne (erstes Viertel des 20. Jahrhunderts) liegt.

‘Satire’ refers not only to two distinct literary genres but also to a mode of speaking and writing that denounces social or political grievances and—at least today—seeks to expose them to ridicule. Satirical programs and contributions have become indispensable, especially in modern and contemporary media, where they not only generates significant public attention but also provokes at times drastic reactions.

This lecture explores the various forms of satire, its historical development, and the theoretical foundations of humor and comedy on which it rests. It also addresses questions concerning the legal boundaries of satire. The (mostly literary) examples discussed range from antiquity to the present day, with a particular focus on German-language literature of the Early Modern period (17th century) and Modernism (first quarter of the 20th century).
