In this class we'll focus on the teaching of English in heterogeneous primary school classrooms. We'll begin with an exploration of the diversity in primary school English classrooms and explore legal aspects of heterogeneity as well as the need for individualised teaching. Based on that, we'll deal with the concepts of differentiation and individualisation. Having built a firm theoretical basis, we'll explore practical approaches of how to differentiate in order to cater for individualised teaching and learning in the primary school English classroom (and beyond). If time and school practice permits, we'll conduct a little project with "real" learners for which we'll design a number of well differentiated offers. This class will, throughout, also take into consideration inclusive teaching and we'll explore practical ideas of how and why to skillfully include ALL learners - regardless of and based on their individual needs - in teaching activities.
Assessment will consist of a teaching project, either in class or in a school near Münster, in which learners prepare, conduct and reflect on a lesson or teaching activity based on the knowledge they gained about differentiated and individualised teaching.
Details on assessment and assessment criteria, a detailed syllabus with a course plan as well as a list of literature, will be provided in class.
