Bruhat-Tits theory studies reductive groups, i.e. variants of the matrix group GL_n, over the p-adic numbers. The central construction is the Bruhat-Tits building associated to the group G, which is a certain kind of combinatorial structure that parametrizes the compact subgroups in G. It has many important applications to number theory, representation theory and arithmetic geometry.
