In this seminar we'll explore the basics of teaching English in primary school. We'll take a closer look at why and how to teach the competences of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Why and how to teach vocubulary and grammar will also be tackled. Other methods and approaches of teaching English to children, like the use of children's literature, will also be dealth with. Throughout the whole course, we'll bear in mind how digital technologies can (or can not) support teaching English to young learners, as well as the fact that primary school English classrooms are diverse and why the children's individual needs need to be taken into consideration for teaching. Apart from the focus on teaching the English langugage, we'll also take a critical look at cultural learning. Based on the knowledge gained throughout the semester, we'll take a critical look at course books and materials for the primary school English classroom. Overall, this class will thus provide students with a basic knowledge of how to teach English to young learners.
