What does it mean to be a girl in twenty-first century America? To answer this question, this course will use a range of Young Adult (YA) fiction published in the United States since 2010 to explore different facets of contemporary girlhood, such as fairytale girlhood, transgender girlhood, Native American girlhood, and the relationship between girlhood and reproductive rights. While we will take an interdisciplinary and intersectional approach, our aim is to compare, analyse, and understand the representation of girlhood across contemporary American YA literature and culture through a literary studies lens. To this end, students will learn how to perform close reading of texts leading to nuanced literary analysis; how to apply critical theories and methods to literary texts; how to formulate research questions; and how to research, write, and edit a short paper answering these research questions.
