Futuristic bodies, technology and digital spaces, or aliens, anxieties and invasion-narratives are commonplace in many Science Fiction texts. In this seminar, we will study the (dis-)continuity of these themes in the Science Fiction genre from a distinctly transmedia perspective. We will examine the inception of Science Fiction’s characteristic themes and their evolution into genre conventions, by examining texts from several time periods, different subgenres and across both literature and film, through the lens of a variety of critical and theoretical approaches. By the end of the semester, participants will feel confident in developing close readings of both literary texts as well as films in the genre.
