This reading class is devoted to Late English, focusing on the language of the 18th and 19th centuries. It will examine the historical, social, and cultural contexts that shaped English during this period, as well as key linguistic developments in vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation, morphology, and syntax. Students will engage with a range of primary sources, such as letters, diary entries, and other contemporary texts, alongside selected secondary texts.
The class will be divided into groups, each group will meet every four weeks for 90 minutes.
