This course explores whether citizens' participation in politics matters for the representation of their opinions in politics. We compare the influence of various forms of political participation --- such as voting, protesting, writing letters to representatives, and lobbying --- and examine whether the disproportionate influence of certain groups in society is justified. We will read cutting-edge empirical research that investigates the factors motivating citizens to participate and how representatives perceive and respond to political participation. In each session, we will discuss one research paper in depth and, over the course of the semester, develop techniques for reading and writing empirical research.
