"A Woman must have money and a room of one's own to write" (Virginia Woolf). In this seminar, we will study a wide range of writings from Aphra Behn to Mary Wollstonecraft (poems and letters as well as dramatic, narrative and philosophical texts, some of which have been rediscovered during the last decades). Thereby, we will not only pay attention to the many ways in which women from diverse backgrounds authorized themsleves as writers, but also reflect on constructions of gender and femininity, address questions of canon formation and revision, and try to explore the historical, social, literary, and cultural contexts in which they "attempted the pen."
