MA Module M 2: Foundations of Empirical Research

In this course, we work towards an overview of ethnographic research methods. The aim is to equip students with methodological knowledge to make informed decisions for the use of specific methods when planning their future projects. In addition, we will engage in group work and hands-on exercises in documentation, reflexivity, ethics, collaboration, and writing.

The graduates of this course acquire an overview of ethnographic methods; can critically reflect on methods of social and cultural anthropology and the social sciences; and have acquired basic skills in documentation, reflexivity, collaboration, multimodality, and writing. The aim is to establish a core of ethnographic methods for your future studies, and you will master the Ethnography Met platform after this course.

Course requirements. Your weekly attendance is compulsory. If you are unable to attend class, please e-mail me in advance.

Active participation (‘aktive Teilnahme’) entails active discussion and contribution to the administered tasks.

Examination requirements (‘Prüfungsleistung’) include writing an annotated bibliography (commented list), a narrative on research methods (text), or a short ethnographic essay based on the practical exercises during the course (all three formats: 3 pages; size 12, line spacing 1.5, 2.5cm margins). The documents must be submitted by email as word.docx files, information on what annotated bibliographies, narratives on research methods, or mini-ethnographic essays can be, and how to write them will be communicated in class.
