This intensive Master Seminar will be held together with Dr. Olivia Anne M. Habana from Ateneo de Manila University. After an (important!) initial meeting via Zoom on September 8th (9-11 a.m.), we will have one week of in-presence-sessions from October 6th-10th, each day from 10-12 a.m. and 2-6 p.m. (on Friday only until 3.p.m.). Access for the initial meeting is via: https://uni-ms.zoom-x.de/j/6603262319?pwd=b3lFWG1iMjBRZjl1czJiZzlvTUxoUT09; Meeting-ID: 660 326 2319; Kenncode: 927216.
The seminar analyzes central strategies of colonial rule in the Philippines under Spanish (1565-1898), US (1898-1946) and Japanese occupation (1942-1945). A special focus in the seminar will be on gender relations. Based on a selection of texts and sources (among them travel accounts and photographs), we will discuss questions of gender norms, family politics, demography, racism and global connections.
