What role do crises play in the European integration process? And why is it so difficult under current circumstances for the EU to advance toward the goal of an “ever-closer union”? Today, the European Union faces a growing array of complex and interconnected challenges — including the war in Ukraine, shifts in the global balance of power, climate change, migration, and democratic backsliding. In this seminar, we will analyze the historical, (geo)political, and institutional dimensions of the EU's development, with particular attention to how it responds to crises, how decisions are made, the constraints it encounters, and what competing ideas and scenarios exist about its future.
