This course introduces students to key ethical principles and practices in anthropological research, with a focus on preparing for fieldwork. We will engage critically with the ethics guidelines of the German Anthropological Association (DGSKA) and examine how they apply to students’ own research contexts. Through discussion of real-world case studies and their own proposed projects, students will explore ethical concerns and challenges such as power dynamics, informed consent, positionality, and data responsibility. A core component of the course will involve practical exercises, including completing the DGSKA ethics reflection sheet and drafting an ethics implications statement to be included in their research proposals. This course supports students in developing a reflexive, ethically grounded approach to fieldwork.
