In this course, we will inquire about the increasing support of far-right politics as a transnational political phenomena. Considering the unprecedented support the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) receives in Germany, the growing phenomenon of Trumpism in the U.S. and the ever-increasing number of right-wing governments in European countries, this political phenomenon will inevitably determine the fate of established democracies in the near future. Therefore, this course aims to enhance a sociological perspective which takes the supporters of far-right movements into focus. For the purpose, we will read ampirical works of an American sociologist, Arlie Russell Hochschild, to have an insight of how and why far-right discourses and policies attract ordinary people. We will also discuss the relevance of Hochschild’s perspective to inquire the increasing support to far-right politics in Germany.
